Robert Rigley was born in 1895 at Basford and was the only surviving son of James a coal miner hewer and Catherine Rigley née Bettison of 758 Park Lane, Old Basford. His father James was born in 1869 at Basford, his mother Catherine Bettison was born in 1868 at Ripley, Derbyshire, they were married in 1889 at Nottihgma and went on to have 3 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family lived at 40 Wilton Street Old Basford Nottingham and were shown as James 42 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Catherine 43 yrs and their son Robert 16 yrs a grocers assistant.
In 1911 he was a grocery assistant.

7/8th Bn King's Own Scottish Borderers
Private Robert Rigley enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 7/8th battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. His medal index card shows the theatre of war he first served in to be the Balkans on on 18th July 1915. He was killed in action on 18th August 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
