Leonard Tomlinson was born in 1885 at Basford and was the son Mary Ellen Tomlinson née Carnell and the late Albert Tomlinson a hosiery stover of 22 Mandalay Street, Old Basford, Nottingham His father Alfred was born in 1847 at Basford and died in 1908 aged 61 yrs, his mother Mary Ellen Carnell was born in 1851 at Nottingham, they were married in 1868 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood, their children were William b1869, Fred b1870, Susanah b1872, Joseph b1876, Mabel b1880, Henry Edward b1881, Amy Ann b1883, Leonard b1885 and Sarah Ann b1890, all were born at Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 22 Mandalay Street, Old Basford and are shown as Mary Ellen 60 yrs a widow she is living with her children, Amy Ann 28 yrs a prambulator upholsterer, Leonard a hosiery shover, Sarah Ann 21 yrs a ledger clerk, also living at the address is her married son Benjamin 33 yrs a hosiery trimmer with his wife Ada Tomlinson 31 yrs a daughter in law and Ada Rosamund 3 yrs a grandchild.

Corporal Leonard Tomlinson enlisted at Nottingham on 31st August 1914, he was 30 yrs and 242 days and was a town labourer. He served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters and went to France 14th July 1915 he was admitted to hospital in Boulogne, France with gout on 4th April 1917 and was sent to England on Hospital Ship St. David 14th April 1917. He returned to France 27th July 1917 and was appointed Lance Corporal 30th August 1917. He was admitted to a field ambulance with shell shock 28th September 1917 and rejoined his battalion 16th October 1917. He was killed in action 21st March 1918 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
