John was born in 1898 the son of Joseph a coal miner and Ada Walters. His father was born in 1869 at Basford and his mother Ada in 1868 at Nottingham. Married about 1891, they had nine children, six surviving infancy - Joseph Walter b.1890 Nottingham, William Henry b.1894 Radford, Ellen b.1896 Kirkby in Ashfield, John b.1898 Kirkby in Ashfield, Samuel b.1901 Radford and James b.1908 at Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 7 Seeley Terrace, Old Basford, Nottingham. William was a miner, Ellen worked in a cotton mill and the other children were scholars.
John was a miner in 1911.

Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
John Walters enlisted at Nottingham and initially served (12338) in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 9th February 1915 and later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He died in Mesopotamian on 28th September 1918 of “Syncope after Influenza” whilst serving with the 39th battalion and is buried in Tehran War Cemetery Grave Reference: III B 6
