William Wheatley was born in 1897 at Ilkeston and was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and Ann Elizabeth Wheatley née Tuck of 13 Stockhill Circus, Nottingham His father Thomas was born in 1864 at Ilkeston, his mother Ann Elizabeth Tuck was born in 1875 at Norwich, they were married in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, William b1897, Ernest b1899, Albert b1902 all were born in Ilkeston, their final child Hilda was born in 1910 in Bulwell. In the 1911 census the family is living at 11 Deptford Street, Bulwell and are shown as Thomas Wheatley 47 yrs a coal mine hewer, he is living with his wife Ann Elizabeth 36 yrs and their children William 14 yrs a folder at a bleach works, Ernest 12 yrs a scholar, Albert 9 yrs a scholar and Hilda 10 months old.
He was working in a bleaching works in the 1911 census.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private William Wheatley enlisted at Hucknall whilst residing at Basford, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died on 1st August 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
