Norman Henry Bowyer was born in 1899 the son of Benjamin Edward George a gardener and the late Hannah Bowyer née Joslin of West Lane, Edwinstowe. His father was born in 1867 at High Laver, Essex and his mother Hannah Joslin was born in 1871 at Bermondsey, London, she died in 1917 at Southwell she was 46 yrs of age, they were married on 3rd October 1896 at St Matthews Church, Brixton, London, they went on to have the following children, Norman Henry b1899 Chertsey, Benjamin Edward George b1901 Lincoln, Elsie b1905 Swinderby, Donald William b1906 Swinderby, Richard Alexander b1908 Eagle, Lincolnshire and Winifred Elizabeth b 1911 at Edwinstowe In 1911 the family are living at Church Street, Edwinstowe and are shown as Benjamin Edwin George Bowyer 44 yrs a gardener, he is living with his wife Hannah 40 yrs and their children, Norman Henry 12 yrs a scholar, Benjamin Edward George 10 yrs a scholar, Elsie 6 yrs a scholar, Donald William 5 yrs, Richard Alexander 3 yrs and Winifred Elizabeth 2 months of age.

Private Norman Henry Bowyer enlisted on 30th August 1916 at Retford, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 1 month, his address was Thoresby Gardens, Ollerton, he was a gardener. He was posted to the 10th battalion training reserve and embarked from Folkstone on 14th August 1917 and landed at Boulogne the same day. He went to Etaples depot on 15th August 1917 and posted to the 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 25th August 1917. He was killed in action on 24th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
