Pte. Barrie volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France, arriving on 01/05/1915. He served in the Ypres Salient for four days before he was killed in action, age 19 years. The nature of the fighting was such that his body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
