Ernest Bentley was born in 1893 and was one of 15 children born to George Thomas Bentley a farm labourer and Sarah Ann Bentley née Dawson of Welby, Lincoln. George Thomas Bentley was born in 1861 at Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire and Sarah Ann Dawson was born in 1868 at Grimsby, married on 17th May 1888 at Colsterworth and went on to have 15 children. Ernest Bentley married Monzella Simpson (born 16th October 1888) on 16th October 1916 their marriage was recorded in the Worksop Registration district, Monzella brought a child to their marriage Harold Bentley Simpson born 17th April 1915, they had a further child Margaret Violet Bentley born 14th April 1917. They lived at 'Little John Cottage' Edwinstowe. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week which commenced on 25th February 1918.
He was a wagon maker.

13th Bn He was conscripted 21/10/1916 and served with the Royal Scots Regiment (T/5572) in the UK until 19/4/1917 when he was posted to Belgium with the Cheshire Regiment.
Hooge Crater Cemetery Grave Reference: V B 16 At his medical Bentley was classified B1 which, under the terms of the Military Service Act, meant 'able to march five miles, and see to shoot with glasses and hear well'. All military sources cite 8/8/1917 as date of death rather than 17/10/1917 which appears on the family headstone.
