Robert was born in 1883 in Nottingham and was the son of Robert George a machine fitter and Ruth Ellen Meats née Woodward, of Nottingham His father Robert George was born in 1861 in Nottingham and his mother Ruth Ellen Woodward was born in 1864 in Bingham. They were married in 1882 in Nottingham and went on to have 7 children , however sadly 1 died in infancy prior to 1911. Their surviving children were : - Robert F B1883 Alice b1887, Ruth Bernice b1893 , Enid b1895, Olive b1899 and Iris b1905, all the children were born in Nottingham . In the 1911 census the family are living at 42 Ashfield Street, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham and are shown as Robert George , head, 50 yrs a machine fitter , he is living with his wife Ruth Ellen 47 yrs a housewife and their children , Ruth Bernice 18 yrs a lace finisher, Enid 16 yrs a drug packer, Olive 12 yrs scholar and Iris 6 years. Robert Frederick has left the family home and we find him at the Church Army Home , Smedley Lane , Cheetham, Manchester , he is single 27 yrs of age and described as an inmate, his occupation was that of a labourer. He married his wife Eliza Smith , in 1914 , the marriage is recorded in the Nottingham Registration area they live at 98 London Road, Spalding, Lincs.

King's Shropshire Light Infantry
Robert Frederick Meats, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 8th Battalion King's Own Shropshire Light Infantry, formerly North Staffordshire Regiment, he was reported missing at Salonika on 28th September 1918. He was confirmed dead by a family notice published on 8th February 1919. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Dorian Memorial.
