John Alfred Nathan was born in 1897 at Nottingham and was the son of Morris Alfred a lace machine fitter and Mary Jane Nathan née Phillips of 54 Coalpit Lane Nottingham. His father Morris Alfred was born in 1874 in Leicester and his mother Mary Jane Phillips was born in 1880 in Lincoln, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham and went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were John Alfred b1897, Sydney Lewitt b1900, Morris b1906 and Edna May b1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Ashley Street, Nottingham and are shown as Morris Alfred 37 yrs a lace machine fitter, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 31 yrs and their children John Alfred 14 yrs a scholar, Sydney Lewitt 11 yrs a scholar, Morris 5 yrs and Edna May 1 year. John Alfred married Lois Jones on 14th November 1914 at the Nottingham Registry Office the day before their daughter, Lois Jane Nathan, was born they lived at lived at 10 Upper Eldon Street Sneinton Nottingham His wife died on 25th September 1918 in Nottingham General Hospital.
He was a coal cleaner.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John Alfred Nathan, enlisted at Nottingham on 6th August 1914, into the Special Reserve for 6 years service, he served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 3rd May 1915 and was killed in action on 9th August 1915. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
In memoriam published 9th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NATHAN. – In loving memory of our son, John Alfred, killed in action, August 9th, 1915, in the battle of Hooge. They miss him most who loved him best. – Dad and mam, and sister and brothers. “NATHAN. – In loving memory of Private J. Nathan, killed in action August 9th, 1915.
