William Leslie was born on 7th March 1898 in Leicester and was the son of the Reverend Alfred a clerk in holy orders and schoolmaster and Sarah Annie Holt, née Walters of The Oaks Vicarage, Loughborough. His father Alfred was born in 1853 in Chetywn, Shropshire and his mother Sarah Annie Walters was born in 1864 in Derby, they were married in 1883 in Derby and went on to have 5 children, sadly one diedi in infancy, their surviving children were : Margaret Faith b185 Knighton, Leicestershire, Dorothy Gertrude b1890 Knighton, Millicent Mary b1894 Leicester, and William Leslie b1898 Leicester. In the 1911 census the family are living at St Nicholas Vicarage, Holy Bones, Leicester and are shown as Alfred 58 yrs a clerk in holy orders and school master, he is living with his wife Sarah Annie 47 yrs and their children Margaret Faith 26 yrs no occupation listed, Dorothy Gertrude 21 yrs no occupation listed, Millicent Mary 17 yrs a scholar and William Leslie 13 yrs a scholar, also living with the family is Hannah Walters 80 yrs described as wife's aunt
He was educated at Wygston Boys school , Loughborough Grammar school and Nottingham University.

Second Lieutenant
10th Bn York and Lancaster Regiment
Second Lieutenant William Leslie Holt joined the Nottingham Officer training corps in June 1916, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Yorks & Lancaster Regiment on 28th March 1917. He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 10th May 1917 and was killed in action on 22nd December 1917. He was buried in Spoilbank Extension cemetery, Zillebeke
In De Ruvignys roll of honour 1914-1919 it states ; his commanding officer wrote to his mother " I need hardly say he is a loss to the battalion, as he was so cheerful and willing to do anything for anybody" and four of his fellow officers wrote " Your son proved himself a most excellent soldier and comrade. He is further commemorated on the following war memorials :- Carlillon Tower Memorial , Loughborough Shepshed Memorial , Leicester Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys memorial , Leicester St James the Greater Church , Oaks in Charnwood, Leicester Loughborough Grammar School Memorial, Leicester
