Bulwell Nottingham
George was the son of William Hardy and his wife Selina nee Holberry. William was born in Colchester, Essex, and Selina Holberry in Newark, Nottinghamshire, in 1865 (O/N/D Newark). They were married in 1882 (O/N/D Newark) and at the time of the 1911 Census had had eight children, all of whom survived: William b. Newark abt. 1883, Harriett b. Newark 1884 (J/A/S Newark), Elizabeth b. Newark abt. 1886, Harry b. Hyson Green birth registered 1889 (J/F/M Nottingham), George b. Bulwell 1891 (A/M/J Basford), Alice b. Bulwell 14 September 1898 (O/N/D Basford), May b. Bulwell 30 May 1903 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Annie b. Bulwell August 1905. In 1891 William (28) a blacksmith, and Selina (26) were living at 42 Austin Street, Bulwell, with their five children William (8), Harriet (6), Elizabeth (4), Harry (2) and George (1 month). William and Selina were at the same address in 1901. They now had six children: William (19) a lace maker, Harriett (17) and Elizabeth (15) who were both cotton minders (lace factory), Harry (12), George (10) and Alice (3). The family had moved to 79 Austin Street, Bulwell, by 1911. William was now working as a labourer at a wagon works. Seven of their eight children were at home on the night of the census: Elizabeth (24) who worked for a machine building works, Harry (22) a coal miner hewer, George (20) a starch carrier in the lace trade, Alice (12), May (7) and Annie (5). Also in the household was William and Selina's grandson, three month old William Hardy. Their eldest child, William, has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census. George's father died on 27 August 1924 aged 62 and his mother, Selina, on 14 September 1947 aged 80 years. Selina was still living at 79 Austen Street at the time of her death. Of George's siblings: William has not been traced after the 1901 Census nor have Harriett and Elizabeth been traced after 1911 Census. Harry may have died in 1966 (March Nottingham). Alice married William Bullas in 1922 (O/N/D Nottingham). In 1939 she and William (b. 7 January 1887) a lace bleacher, were living in the Nottingham area. They had two sons living at home: Ralph (b. 29 February 1924) a grocer's assistant and John William (b. 8 January 1926) who was still at school. William Bullas died on 5 September 1943 and Alice died on 2 December 1971 aged 73. Both are buried in the Hardy family grave in Nottingham Northern Cemetery. May married Maurice Wellington Richardson in 1927 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1939 May and Maurice (b. 18 June 1904), a grocery provision and general dealer (shop keeper), were living in the Nottingham area. May died in 1969 (December Nottingham) aged 66 and her husband Maurice on 21 December 1970. Annie married Albert Drury in 1929 (J/F/M Nottingham). In 1939 Annie and Albert (b. 24 May 1903) a cutting engine driver, and their son Roy A. (b. 24 March 1929) who was still at school, were living in the Nottingham area.
In 1911 he was a starch carrier in the lace trade.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
Inscription on headstone, Northern Cemetery, Bulwell, Nottingham: 'In loving memory of William the beloved husband of Selina Hardy who died August 27th 1924 aged 62 years. At rest. Also of George son of the above killed in action in France Nov. 1st 1918 aged 27 years. Also Selina Hardy beloved wife and mother of the above died Sept. 14th 1947 aged 90 years. Reunited.' Selina's brother, Harry Holberry, who died in 1941, is also buried in this grave as is her daughter Alice Bullas (nee Hardy) who died on 2 December 1971 aged 73 and Alice’s husband, William Bullas, who died on 5 September 1943. Reunited. Registers of Soldiers' Effects: George's father, William, was his legatee. Probate: Hardy Selina of 79 Austin-street Bulwell Nottinghamshire widow died 14 September 1947 Probate Nottingham 31 October to Maurice Wellington Richardson [son-in-law] grocer and Albert Drury [son-in-law] colliery worker. Effects £361 8s. 11d.
