Matthew Bates Hopkins was born in 1880 the son of Edmund a labourer and Annie Hopkins (née Bates ). His father Edmund Rodger Hopkins was born in 1857 in Godmanchester, Huntingdon and his mother Annie Bates was born in 1860 in Lower Heyford, Northamptonshire. Married in 1882 at Northampton, they had the following children, Matthew Bates b.1880 Nether Heyford, Edmund b.1883 Nether Heyford, Alfred b.1883 Nether Heyford, Wynn Henry b.1886 Nether Heyford, Myra b.1888 Nether Heyford, George b.1890 Nether Heyford, Hephzibah b.1891 Nether Heyford, Annie b.1894 Nottingham, Elizabeth b.1896 Nottingham and John b.1900 Nottingham. Matthew married Emma Ellen Walker in 1902 and they had three children - Jane Ann b. 1902, Walter b.1906 and Myra Hopkins b.1911. In 1911 Matthew lived at 51 Vernon Road, Kikby in Ashfield. His family were living at 93 Bradford Street, Bulwell at the time of his death. In 1911 his parents and siblings lived at 71 Turton Street, Bulwell, Nottingham. Edward was a labourer, Myra a cotton winder and George a painter.

Matthew Bates Hopkins enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, landing in France on 3rd May 1915. He and died of wounds at No. 11 General Hospital, Boulogne on 17th June 1915.
