Harry Kirkham was born in 1879 in Bulwell and was the son of Samuel a walling mason on the Midland Railway and Ann Mason née Walker of 28 Thames Street, Bulwell, Nottingham. Both his parents were born in 1851 in Bulwell. They were married in 1877, their marriage being recorded in the Basford Registration District, and they went on to have 4 children all of whom were born in Bulwell. They were: Harry b1879 Mabel Ellen b1881, Ethel Mary b1885 and Frank Arthur b1891. Harry married his wife Sarah Shaw in 1902 in Nottingham. They had a son Vincent born 1902, his wife Sarah died in 1902 aged 21 yrs and their son Vincent died in 1903 under 1 year of age. In the 1911 census Harry's parents are living at 28 Thames Street, Bulwell and are shown as Samuel 60 yrs a walling mason with the Midland Railway who is living with his wife Ann 60 yrs and their children, Harry 32 yrs a widower and a coal miner, Frank 19 yrs a meat salesman. Also living at the address is Noah Walker 70 yrs, Samuel's brother-in-law (died 4 August 1913). In this census Harry states he had been married for 8 yrs and had a child who had died. His mother died on 12th November 1914 aged 64 yrs.
In 1911 he was a miner (hewer).

10th Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
Private Harry Kirkham enlisted at Doncaster and served with the 10th battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 30th August 1916 aged 37 yrs and is buried in Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras.
Inscription on family gravestone, Nottingham Northern Cemetery, Bulwell: 'In loving memory of Noah Walker who died Aug. 4th 1913 aged 72 years. Light after darkness. Also Ann, the beloved wife of Samuel Kirkham and sister of the above who died November 12th 1914 aged 64 years. Until the day break and the shadows flee away. Also of Pte Harry Kirkham KOYLI son of the above who was killed in action (in France) August 30th 1916, aged 37 years. Duty nobly done.'
