Gordon was born in 1894 the son of Joseph a miner and Celia Leatherland (née Hayes). His siblings were Florence, Nellie, Gethin, Harold and Amanda Leatherland. In 1901 the family lived at 87 Coventry Road Bulwell. In 1903 his mother died and by 1909 his father had married Rhoda Dando. In 1911 they lived at 35 Minerva Street Bulwell with his children as well as a stepson John Dando.
Gordon was a presser in a hosiery finishing business.

Gordon Leatherland enlisted at Nottingham and first entered theatre (France) on 25th August 1915. He was killed by shellfire in camp behind the lines. Ramparts Cemetery Lille Gate Ypres Grave Reference: I 3.
Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 20/6/1918: “LEATHERLAND. – In loving memory of my dear brother, Pte. Gordon Leatherland, killed in action June 20th, 1917, aged 24 years.
