Thomas was born in 1895 the son of Samuel a corporation labourer and Kate Bentley. Samuel and Kate had twelve children but two died in infancy prior to the 1911 Census. Thomas's siblings were - Sarah, Samuel, Mary, Kate, Annie, Herbert, George, Percy and Horace. In 1911 the family lived at 5 Spondon Street and later 21 Osbourne Street (both Sherwood Nottingham).
In 1911 he was a grocer's errand boy.
