He was the son of Thomas, a surgeon, and Eliza Burnie and the brother of Helen, Sidney and Thomas Burnie. In 1901 they lived at 387, Mansfield Road, Nottingham.
He was a professional soldier serving with the RGA in Devon in 1911.
