George Burgess was the son of John George and Mary Ann (née Buswell) Burgess. John George, was born in 1867 in Luddenham, Leicestershire, Mary Ann Burgess in 1869 at Basford. Married in 1887, they had nine children eight surviving infancy - Alice Ethel b.1888 Nottingham, Gladys Esther b.1890 Nottingham, Arthur b.1891 Nottingham, George b.1893 Nottingham, John b.1897 West Bridgford, Albert b.1901 Carrington and Doris b.1905 Carrington. In 1911, they lived at 5, Milner Road, Sherwood. John George was a lace curtain designer, Alice Ethel a dress maker and Arthur a lace curtain draughtsmen.
In 1911 he was a butcher.

George Burgess Buswell enlisted at Nottingham on 9th November 1914. He gave his age as 21 yrs and 280 days. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st February 1915. He landed in France on 28th June 1915 and was hospitalised on 1st July 1915 at No 9 General Hospital at Rouen with influenza. He was disharged from hospital on 19th July 1915 and rejoined his unit in the field on 10th August 1915. George was killed in action and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchet, France Grave Reference: XV K 5
