Arthur was the son of Arthur Alfred and Harriet Eleanor Dawson of Warwick Road, Mapperley Park, Nottingham. He was the brother of Leonard Leslie Dawson (b. 1892) who worked as a clerk. In 1911 Arthur and Leonard lived with their grandmother Sarah Dawson at 11 Park Valley Nottingham along with two servants. Leonard served as a lieutenant in the 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters and was killed on 27 May 1918 aged 26 leaving a widow, Ethel (née Gauntley) whom he had married on 1 December 1916.
In 1911 Arthur was manager of a lace factory.
