He was the son of John Henry and Elizabeth Lander and the brother of Mabel Alice, Ellen, Mary Elizabeth, Kate and Albert Lander. In 1911 they lived at 18 Lloyd Street Nottingham. Lander's parents later lived at 19 Daybrook Street Sherwood Nottingham.

Rifleman John Henry Lander, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action on 15th August 1916, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Death notice published 28th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LANDER. – Killed in action, August 15th, Rifleman J. Lander, King's Royal Rifles, aged 17, 19 Daybrook-street, Sherwood, late with J. B. Lewis and Son, Ltd. Sadly missed by his sorrowing mother, father, sisters, and brother.” In memoriam published 15th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LANDER. – In loving memory of Rifleman J. H. Lander, K.R.R., of 19, Daybrook-street, Sherwood, aged 17, killed in action August 15th, 1916. Ever in our thoughts. – Mother, father, sisters, and brother. “LANDER. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Rifleman J. H. Lander, K.R.R., killed in action August 15th, 1916. Silently mourned. – Mabel and Nellie.” In memoriam published 15th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LANDER. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Rifleman J. H. Lander, killed in action August 15th, 1916.
