Henry was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the son of William a lace maker and Ellen Key neé Tivet of 7 Wentworth Terrace, Forest Road, West Nottingham. His father William was born in 1859 in Nottingham and his mother was born in 1861 in Nottingham , they were married in 1879 in Nottingham and went on to have 6 children , sadly 1 died in infancy prior to 1911, their surviving children were : - William b1881, Albert b1887, Frederick b 1884, Gertrude b1890 and Henry b1894. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Wentworth Terrace, Forest Road West, Nottingham and are shown as William 51 yrs a lace maker , he is living with his wife Ellen 50 yrs and their children Frederick 27 yrs a gas meter maker, Gertrude 21 yrs a hosiery finisher and Henry 17 yrs a painters improver. Henry marries his wife Daisy White (born 9th May 1895) in 1913 in Nottingham and they go on to have a son Arthur Henry born 3rd October 1914, they lived at 25 Devon Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham. Following his death his widow Daisy was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 24th September 1917.
Attended All Saints Church Sunday School and was a member of 10th Nottingham (All Saints) Company, Boys Brigade.

Private Henry Key enlisted at Carlton whilst residing at Netherfield he was reported missing September 1916, and officially reported killed in action on 13th September 1916 in November 1917. He is buried at Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont (grave ref VIII.C.7).
War obituary, All Saints Church News, November 1917: 'Henry Key, 7 Wentworth Terrace, Private Sherwood Foresters, reported wounded and missing September 1916, now officially reported killed, aged 24, leaves a widow and one child, was in All Saints Boys Brigade and Sunday School.'
