Charles Henry Thornhill was born on 17th September 1892, he was baptised on 29th October 1892 at St Mary the Virgin Church, Attenborough, he was the son of Samuel a labourer and Clara Florence Thornhill née Little of Southwell Road, Lowdham. His father Samuel was born in 1864 at Chilwell and his mother Clara Florence Little was born in 1860 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Wolverhampton registration district, they went on to have 3 children, Charles b1892 Chilwell, Matilda Irence b1896 Chilwell and Miriam Ada b1899 at Lowdham In 1901 they lived on Southwell Road Lowdham. In the 1911 census the family are still living at Southwell Road, Lowdham and are shown as Samuel 47 yrs a labourer, he is living with his wife Clara 51 yrs and their children Matilda 15 yrs a shop assistant and Ada 12 yrs of age, their son Charles is listed as being 18 yrs of age however his entry has been crossed through. Charles Henry Thornhill has not been found at any other address on the 1911 census.

Private Charles Henry Thornhill enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Lowdham, he served with the 1st battalion Coldstream Guards and was killed in action on 22nd July 1917 and is buried at Canada Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Grave Reference: I E 32
