John Watson was born on 2nd November 1884 and was baptised on 6th September 1885 at St Marys Church, Lowdham, he was the son of Henry the verger at St Mary's Church Lowdham and Jemima Watson of Lowdham. His father Henry was born in 1854 at Lowdham he died on 24 February 1915 aged 61 and his mother Jemima Chapel was born in 1861 also at Lowdham, she died five years later on 6 February 1920 age 59. They were married on 6th September 1880, at St Mary's Church, Lowdham, they went on to have the following children, William Henry b1881, John b1884, Emma b1887 and Arthur b1892 all were born in Lowdham. John married his wife Gertie Carnill (born 15th June 1884 at Lowdham) in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district. They lived at Hawksley Villas, Main Road, Lowdham. They had the following children, Frank born 14th December 1909 and Harry Carnill born 7th July 1914. In the 1911 census John was living with his wife at Ton Lane, Lowdham and was shown as John 26 yrs a nursery gardener he is living with his wife Gertie 25 yrs and thier son Frank 1 year of age. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Ton Lane Lowdham and are shown as Henry 57 yrs a church clerk he is living with his wife Jemima 50 yrs and their son Arthur 19yrs a gardener. John's widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week commencing on 22nd April 1918.

Private John Watson enlisted at Lowdham, he served with the 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Family grave and headstone, Lowdham (St Mary) churchyard: 'In loving memory of Henry Watson, who died Febry 24th 1915, aged 61 years. Also of Jemima, his beloved wife who died Febry 6th 1920, aged 59 years. Also of John Watson, son of the above, killed in action in France. Sept 26th 1917. Aged 33 years. At rest.'
