John known as Jack Taylor was born in 1890 and was the son of Frederick a plaster miner and Sarah Jane Taylor née Pearce of Malt Street, Gotham. His father Frederick was born in 1866 in Hanley Staffordshire and his mother Sarah Jane Pearce was born in 1865 in Welton, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area they had a further child Harry born in 1888 in Barton in Fabis In the 1891 census the family were living at Malt Street, Gotham.

Private John (Jack) Taylor, enlisted in Nottingham giving his place of birth as Barton, Nottinghamshire he served with the 1/1st Battalion Herefordshire Regiment, he was was killed in action 23rd July 1918. He is buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire, commemorated by a special memorial.
In memoriam published 23rd July 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TAYLOR. – In loving memory of Pte. J. Taylor, killed in action in France July 23rd, 1918, late with Messrs. Dixon and Parker. Some time we'll understand. – Mother, father, brothers, and sisters. “TAYLOR. – In loving memory of dear Jack, killed in action July 23rd, 1918.
