Tuxford - St Nicholas Church (Men of Tuxford)

Grade II listed, Entry No 1421779 (2014). Freestanding memorial in the churchyard of St Nicholas's Church, Lincoln Road, Tuxford, which was unveiled on 27th November 1921 by Mr D. Walpole (of the British Legion) and dedicated by The Archdeacon of Newark, Ven. Egbert Hacking, It was designed and made by H.J. Tuttell (of Lincoln) at a cost of £163. The inscription reads,'Thanksgiving to Almighty God for victory and in grateful memory of the men of Tuxford who gave their lives for their country and the world's freedom in the Great War, 1914 - 1918. Grant them thy peace, Lord. Erected by the residents of Tuxford.' The plinth carries the 16 names of those who died in the First World War, and of the seven lost in the Second. The original cross was replaced with a Latin cross after storm damage in 1999. A photograph taken in 1953 of St Nicholas Church and showing the original cross can be found on 'Picture the Past' website (photograph ref. ACCE000656). There is also a roll of honour on a pillar near the south door which lists 15 men: George Allison, Victor Bartram, Joe Booth, Roland Bradbury, Arthur Chatterton, William Lowe, William Merrills, George Morley, Edward Robinson, Edgar Stead, George M Stone, Jack Taylor, Mark Waplington, Tom Waterhouse and Arthur Worland. A stained glass window on the south wall of the nave of the church was installed in remembrance of Armistice Day 1918 (AK Nicholson, London). Dedication: '1914-1918. The offering of Elizabeth Green of Broadstairs in remembrance of Armistice Day Nov 11th 1918. Glory to God on high: on earth peace.' (WMA 27101)
