The memorial commemorates the men of New Basford parish who died in the war. The cost of the memorial was raised by public subscription and was erected by RG Lomas & Son of Derby at a cost of £320. The original was made 'in statuary marble and alabaster enriched with coloured marbles. The alabaster cornice was decorated with leaves and grapes, emblems of sacrifice. Royal Arms and those of St George. 11ft x 5ft 6ins.' (Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project website). Dedication, 'To the Glory of God and in memory of the men from this parish who laid down their lives in the Great War.' St Augustine's church, which was built in 1859 for the ecclesiastical district of New Basford which was formed in 1847, closed and was demolished 1-3 September 1989 as it was an unsafe structure. The parish war memorial was put into temporary storage but forgotten about for over 18 years when it was rediscovered and arrangements made for it to be restored and transferred to St Leodegarius Church, Old Basford parish. Damage to the memorial and lack of space in St Leodegarius meant that two statues of St George and St Augustine, and their shields with other elaborate decorations had to be removed from the memorial. The statues and shields are now stored at a private address. The memorial was rededicated at St Leodegarius on 9 November 2008.
