St Nicholas church, Maid Marian Way, Nottingham. The memorial was dedicated on Monday, 6 December 1920 by the Bishop of Southwell. The order of service included the names of those who were commemorated on the memorial (Nottinghamshire Archives ref. PR 19,169). Dedication: 'To the Glory of God and in memory of the undernamed members of this congregation, parish and parochial organisations who laid down their lives in the Great War 1914-1919. They loved not their lives unto the death. This tablet was erected by the congregation and parishioners to record their deep gratitude for the lives so nobly and readily sacrificed in the great world fight for righteousness and honour.' The interior of the church has been re-ordered over the last 50 years and the war memorial war was refurbished during the last major works. Also in the church is a stained glass window with a representation of the Ascension given in thanksgiving for the safe return of two brothers who served in the war. The inscription reads: “To the Glory of God this window was erected by John Francis Townend Esquire as an act of Thanksgiving for the safe return of his two sons from the Great War 1914-1919. ‘The Lord hath done great things for us whereof we are glad.’” (WMA 27443). Another member of the congregation made a gift to the church in thanksgiving for his safe return. This was a reredos with the inscription; “To the Glory of God and as a thankoffering for safety during the Great War, 1914-1919, this reredos is presented by Captain John T Roper RASC, and Mrs Roberts.” (Nottinghamshire Archives, PR 19,115/3, Faculty 26 November 1920)
