Nottingham - Dakeyne Street Lads' Club (2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade)

2nd Nottingham Company the Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads Club). Photograph of memorial on the cover of an Armistice Day service sheet.

Oliver Hind, founder and captain of 2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads Club), provided the memorial which includes the names of Lt Col LA Hind, Lt JFM Hind and Trooper OA Hind. The inscription read: 'For King and Country. August 1914-November 1918. Remember before God the gallant men who fell in the Great War for the freedom of the world. Their Name Liveth for Evermore. This memorial was erected by Oliver Hind, captain of the club, to the glorious and imperishable memory of the old boys who made the supreme sacrifice at the call of duty. Think upon them with reverence and forget not they died for their country and for you'. The club occupied the premises of the former Nottingham General Lunatic Asylum and the memorial was originally on the wall of the games room. A photograph of the memorial in situ is reproduced in a history of the Company, 'Oliver Hind and the 2nd Nottingham Company of the Boys' Brigade', by Terence Woolley. The club transferred to the City Council when the Boys Brigade company closed. The memorial, believed to have been in alabaster, fell into disrepair and being deemed beyond economical repair was disposed of some time in the last decade. However, a new memorial to the 'Dako Boys', similar to the original, was installed in the Boys' Club's new premises in 2014. The inscription reads, '450 Old Boys of the 2nd Nottingham Boys Brigade volunteered and below are listed those who made the supreme sacrifice. Forget not that they died for their country and you. 1914-1918. (Names) The original plaque was erected by Mr Oliver Hind, founder and captain of the Brigade.'
