Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The memorial commemorates members of the Nottingham Rowing Club (established 1862), the Nottingham Boat Club (established 1894), the Nottingham Britannia Rowing Club (established 1869) and the Nottingham Union Rowing Club (established 1871). Dedication: 'To the Glory of God and in grateful memory of the members of the four rowing clubs of this city who died for their country in the Great War. This memorial was erected by the members of the Nottingham Rowing Club (NRC), Nottingham Britannia Rowing Club (NBRC), Nottingham Union Rowing Club (NURC) & Nottingham Boat Club (NBC).’ Nottingham Evening Post, Monday 25 October 1920: ‘Rowing Clubs’ Memorial. Bronze Tablet on Trent Bridge Buttress. It will be remembered that some time ago it was proposed to erect a memorial to the fallen rowing men of Nottingham, and the City Council granted permission to the four rowing clubs to erect a bronze tablet on one of the buttresses of Trent Bridge. Differences of opinion as to details delayed the execution of the memorial but happily all difficulties have now been overcome, and Messrs. Chas. Smith Sons and Co. Ltd, Birmingham, have received instructions to proceed with the memorial. This will contain the names of 55 members of the four rowing clubs who died for King and country. The names will be arranged alphabetically in one list, and after each name will appear the initials of the fallen member’s club.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) There are now two rowing clubs in the city, based on the River Trent on the south side of Trent Bridge: the Nottingham Rowing Club, formed from the merger in 2006 of the Nottingham Boat Club and the Nottingham Britannia Rowing Club, and the Nottingham and Union Rowing Club formed by the amalgamation of the Nottingham Union Rowing Club and the Nottingham Rowing Club in 1946 (the NURC club house, boats and equipment had been destroyed in the bombing raid of 1941).
