Farnsfield - St Michael

St Michael, Main Street, Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, NG22 8FY. The memorial is of Whitby stone - four square base and pillar surmounted by a St Andrew cross. The pillar is adorned with a bronze Crusader cross. The memorial was unveiled on 27 August 1922 by Captain Sherbrooke RN DSO and dedicated by the Archdeacon of Nottingham, the Venerable WJ Coneybeare. A report of the ceremony appeared in the Neward Advertiser in August 1922. The original dedication read: 'In proud and loving memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives for God, King and Country in the Great War 1914-1918. May they rest in peace.' The memorial has been restored and the dedication now reads, 'In proud and loving memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives for God, King and Country in the World Wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. Jesu Mercy. May they rest in peace.' The names of those from the parish and the congregation who died in both wars are on a tablet below the dedication.
