Radcliffe on Trent - St Mary's Church

Memorial

UKNIWM Ref - 27274

St Mary's Church, Main Road, Radcliffe on Trent NG12 2FD. The memorial is at the east end of the churchyard. The memorial, which cost £660, was unveiled in April 1921 by Col Charles Birkin, who had served in France. The service was conducted by Rev R Cecil Smith, the vicar of St Mary's. One panel on the memorial records the names of nine men who 'died of illness contracted while on active service.' Further details of the memorial and ceremony are described in a local history publication, 'Radcliffe on Trent 1837-1920: A study of a village during an era of change', edited by Pamela Priestland and published by Ashbracken. A community website marking the centenary of the Great War has biographies of over 400 men and women who served in the war (see www.radcliffeontrentww1.org.uk).
