St John the Evangelist, Perlethorpe, Nottinghamshire, NG22 9EQ. The church stands in the grounds of Thoresby which was later the ducal estate of the Pierrepont family. (later Earls Manvers). The present church building was provided the 3rd Earl Manvers. The memorial is a lych-gate at the south entrance to the churchyard. It was funded by private subscriptions (58 donors) and a donation from the fourth Earl Manvers. The lych-gate was designed by Mr A Gleave of Nottingham and made and erected by workmen from the Thoresby Estate while the carving on the lych-gate barge-boards and posts was executed by the Tudsbury brothers from nearby Edwinstowe. The memorial was unveiled and dedicated on 4 December 1921 by the Earl Manvers. (Source: Southwell & Nottingham Church History Project). A plaque on one gate post has the names of those who died and the plaque on the second gate post reads: ‘1914-1918 To the memory of those who at the call of King and Country left all that was dear to them endured hardness faced danger and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom.’ As can be seen from the photographs, the original bronze tablets on the gate posts have been replaced (c1914).
