St Ann with Emmanuel was opened in 1974. It replaced two previous Nottingham churches of St Ann (by R. C. Clarke, demolished 1971) and Emmanuel (by Watson Fothergill, demolished 1972).

At the time of the Great War the Nottingham district today regarded as St Ann’s was divided into six parishes which had been created during the nineteenth century to encourage an expanding urban population to worship. By the middle of the last century with the population of inner-city Nottingham declining and church attendance falling, most of these parishes had disappeared through amalgamation or abolition. The area’s Anglican churches were demolished and currently only St Ann’s with Emmanuel remains active as a modern church which has replaced two earlier buildings demolished in the 1970s. Collecting and researching names is proving challenging. This project has relied extensively on war memorial data. A photograph of the missing St Ann’s memorial (301 names) has recently surfaced, that from St Bartholomew (153 confirmed fatalities) survived the building’s destruction and both appear on this website. However, similar evidence is unavailable across other parts of east Nottingham. Emmanuel’s memorial was lost during later twentieth century slum clearance and none were created at St Catharine's, St Luke's or St Mark's. The St Ann’s Virtual Memorial is being constructed from Nottingham Evening Post obituary entries, the CWGC Debt of Honour Register and other military sources, census data and Birth, Marriage and Death indexes. It is evident that over 500 Great War fatalities from the area encompassing modern St Ann’s are not commemorated anywhere else. David Nunn

  • John Beckett, Professor of Local History at Nottingham University, notes ‘The loss of memorials in the 1960s now seems extraordinary to us, but a combination of the Second World War, and a general distancing from the events of World War One seems to have had this effect. In those days 11 November was not an important day at all – Remembrance took place only on the nearest Sunday to 11 November, and The Times report on 11 November 1968, following the Remembrance Day Cenotaph service the previous day, is distinctly low key and barely refers to the 50th anniversary. The Queen did not even attend – she had gone on a state visit to South America. In these circumstances, the memorials seem not to have been regarded with great importance and when churches like St Ann’s... were demolished, no one seems to have taken responsibility for them.’

The church was consecrated on 26 November 1896... On 16 August 1946 a fire damaged part of the roof of the church and vestry. • Southwell & Nottingham Church History Project notes ‘St Mark’s was built on a green open site on Windsor Street, now known as Huntingdon Street. It stood on the east side of the street, approximately where Hopewells the Furnishers are located today... In 1921 that the beginning of the end was announced. A proposal was published suggesting that some city centre churches may have to close, due to reducing parish populations... St Mark’s survived a little longer, but congregations were sparse. In January 1934 six services a week were held, but only thirteen people attended weekly communion. By early 1939 only two Sunday services were conducted. Collections fell correspondingly with income only £2 5s a week. The final service was on 2 September 1939. Few people attended and the last collection raised only £1 10s 10d. The building was demolished 1956/7.’ No Great War memorial was created at St Mark’s Church.
