The junction of Ilkeston Road with Radford and Lenton Boulevards which is the heart of All Souls Parish, Radford. Tradition has it that locals used to refer to this spot as 'Ation Corner' because the intersection was overlooked by a church (Salvation), a school (Education), a public house (Damnation) and a pawnbroker's shop [long since closed but formerly behind the green shuttering] (Temptation). David Nunn

All Souls Radford's Great War memorial was apparently lost or destroyed during the late Victorian church's demolition in 1979. Fortunately, Brian Szowkomud, who grew up in Radford, has obtained from Bob Cripwell a list of names headed 'Taken From The Original War Memorial'. Cripwell, notes Brian ' ... climbed the ladder and another All Souls churchwarden Joseph Bamford (since deceased) wrote the names down as Bob read them. Bob remembers that the memorial was old metal... brass? which was possibly scrapped when the church was demolished.' Brian's important discovery has made it possible to compile this section of the Roll of Honour. There is a discrepancy between the All Souls total cited on Nottingham St Mary's City and County memorial (255) and the number on Bob Cripwell's list (241). David Nunn

  • According to Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project's website: 'The War Memorial to the fallen of World War One was planned to be an ebony plaque. The Boots Company offered £30 10s towards the costs.’ On Monday July 6th 1920, the Nottingham Evening Post confirmed that ‘A memorial to the fallen of Radford was unveiled in All Souls’ Church yesterday.’ A Book of Remembrance and a Roll of Honour were also produced and a memorial service took place on 4th July 1920 with music played by the Nottingham Military Band.' Neither Book of Remembrance nor Roll of Honour have been traced. The Second World War memorial comprised a side chapel dedicated to the fallen of both All Souls and Christ Church, Radford, a choir vestry and the refurbishment of the Children’s Corner. There was also a Book of Remembrance but this is also missing.
