Cropwell Butler - Tithby cum Cropwell Butler (cemetery)

Cropwell Butler Cemetery, Cropwell Bishop Road, Cropwell Butler, Notts. The cemetery was consecrated in 1905 and the lych gate, paid for by public subscription, replaced the gates to the cemetery in 1920 as a memorial to those who had died in the Great War. Inscription above lych gate: 'Death is swallowed up in victory.' A plaque on the inside of the lych gate reads, 'Tithby-cum-Cropwell Butler. This lych gate is erected in memory of the following men of this parish who fell in the Great War 1914-1919 (names). Duty bravely done. 1920.' The lych gate is Grade II listed; first listed 11 February 2011 (list entry number 1396456). The War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £740 in 2009 to repair areas of rotten timber. These were mainly on the areas where the timber sat on the stone base and was in direct contact with damp conditions. In addition, some of the side wing details had to be replaced. All new timber was stained to match the original (WMT ref WM3107). The area outside the lych gate was landscaped c2012 by Nottinghamshire County Council through its ‘Local Improvement Scheme’, and a new pavement laid together with a flight of steps and ramp access from a pavement alongside the road. A small parking bay was included in the scheme.
