He was the son of John and Emma Burkitt and the brother of Rose Burkitt. In 1901 they lived at 10 Leicester Street Nottingham. Walter married Mary J Drayton in Nottingham during the Jul/Aug/Sept quarter 1913.
In 1911 he was a warehouseman (Wallpaper).

1st Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Walter Burkitt enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters and sometime after 1st January 1916 was posted to the 1st battalion in France. He was captured during a German raid on their trenches on 4th April 1917 and died of wounds as a prisoner of war on 24th April 1917.He is buried in Caudry British Cemetery, grave IV.C.2.

In memoriam published 24th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- BIRKITT. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. Walter Burkitt, died of wounds in prisoner of war hospital, April 24th, 1917. Though death divides, fond memories cling.
