He was the second son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Attenborough of Hill Top Eastwood Nottinghamshire. He was living in Bentley Yorkshire with his wife and young child on enlistment. Attenborough's elder brother died from TB after being discharged from the army.
He was a miner.

Enlisting at Doncaster in November 1914, he excelled in training and was awarded the cross guns for marksmanship. He served in Salonika, Egypt and France. In 1915 he was hospitalised with shrapnel wounds to the back and right shoulder. Attenborough had two narrow escapes in the trenches - firstly when a piece of shell which killed the man next to him removed a piece of his hat and secondly when his boot heel was hit by a sniper.
