The family lived at 59 Henry Street, Nottingham before moving to 28 Leeshill Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. Ernest Dowell married Elizabeth Ann Dowell who was born in 1887 and worked as a hosiery turner off. They lived at 49 Rossington Street, Sneinton dale, Nottingham before moving to 4 Manor Avenue, St. Stephen Road, nottingham.

13th Bn Royal Irish Rifles
Rfn. Dowell volunteered for service and joined the Sherwood Foresters, No. 20724 and served with them in Gallipoli. He was drafted to France and was transferred to 13th Battalion, Royal irish Rifles. He was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres, but his body was never recovered. His name, however, was commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
