He was the son of John and Martha Starbuck and the brother of Elizabeth, William, Edna, James and Walter Starbuck. In 1901 they lived on Cow Lane Bramcote Nottinghhamshire. He was the husband of Clara (née Francis) Starbuck and the father of Cyril Starbuck. In 1911 they were lodging at 11 Chapel Street Stapleford Nottinghamshire. They were to have four more children - Joseph, William, Walter and Ethel Starbuck. Clara married Henry Dixey in 1918.
John Strachan was a pit horse driver in 1901.

South Nottinghamshire Hussars
Private John Starbuck enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1/1st battalion South Nottinghamshire Hussars, he landed in Egypt on 26th April 1915 and was killed in action on 23rd December 1917 in Egypt. He was buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt grave reference C137.
