Person Details
Oxton Nottinghamshire
Arthur was born in 1892 the son of John B and Ellen nee Key who were married in 1885 (J/A/S, registered Southwell). According to the 1911 Census John and Ellen had ten children of whom nine were still living at the time of the census. Only nine children are named on the census between 1891 and 1911: John Bailey (b. 26 Dec 1885), Albert Edward (b. 1887), Sarah (b. 1890), Arthur Thomas (b. 1892), Ernest William (b. 25 Oct 1896), George Frederick (b. 19 May 1896), Nellie/Nelly Elizabeth (b 14 February 1899), Harold (b. 2 July 1901) and Leonard (b. 1904). Sarah who was born in 1890 (A/M/J), died in 1899 (A/M/J). All the children were born in Oxton. There appears to be a discrepancy in the 1901 Census as Arthur's age was given as '11', (b abt. 1890) - his deceased sister Sarah had been born in 1890 (A/M/J) - and he is listed as 19 years old on the 1911 Census. There is a record of the birth of an Arthur Thomas Strutt in 1892 (J/F/M) which agrees with Arthur's age on the 1911 Census. The only other reference to Arthur's second name is on the 1911 Census, 'Arthur Tom'. In 1891 John Strutt (32, b. Oxton), an agricultural labourer, and Ellen (31, b. Wellingore, Lincoln) were living at 2 Blind Lane, Oxton, with their three children, John (5), Albert (3) and Sarah (1). By 1901 they were living at Lodge Houses, Oxton, and six children were in the home on the night of the census: John (15), who was a cattle boy on a farm, Albert, Arthur, Ernest (8), George (4) and Nelly (2). The family was still living in Oxton at the time of the 1911 Census; John senior was now working as a gardener (domestic). Seven children were recorded in the household: John, a horseman on a farm, Arthur and Ernest who were both farm labourers, and George, Nelly, Harold (9) and Leonard (6). Arthur married Ethel May Barker in 1915 (J/A/S, registered Nottingham); they had one child. No firm identification has been found for his child, but the birth of an Ellen S Barker was registered in Nottingham in 1915 (J/F/M), mother's maiden name 'Barker'. At the time of the notice of Arthur's death in the local paper his wife was living at 65 Annesley Street, Meadows, Nottingham, although she later lived at 21 Havelock Street, St. Ann's Well Road, Nottingham (CWGC). Ethel married George E Cottam in 1924 (O/N/D, registered Nottingham). Arthur's father died in 1943 aged 83 and his mother in 1838 aged 78. Of Arthur's siblings: John Bailey Strutt, b. 26 December 1885 d. 1978 aged 93 (registered Basford). Married Daisy M Bardill, 1912 (O/N/D). Albert Edward Strutt, b. 1887 (O/N/D), m Hannah Sophia Bradley 1910 (A/M/J, registered Basford), d. 1966 aged 79 (registered Basford). 1911 census: wife (Hannah Sophia) and child Kitty (2m), living at Cross Street, Arnold, occupation blacksmith. Ernest William, b. 25 October 1893, d. 1981 age 87, (registered Newark). George Frederick, b. 19 May 1896, d. 1972 aged 75. Nellie Elizabeth, b. 14 February 1899, married name Hillhouse, d. 1996 aged 96 (registered Mansfield). Harold, b. 2 July 1901, d. 1973 aged 71 (registered Nottingham).
