John was born in Elksely in 1896 and was the son of Elizabeth Scott (formerly Fox) of Cleveland House, Tuxford, Newark, and the late John Fox (CWGC). He was their only son. John Fox senior died 25 March 1903 in his 59th year (headstone Elkesley St Giles churchyard) and in 1904 Elizabeth married James Scott a farmer of East Markham who already had four children. In the 1911 census the family are living at Cleveland farm, East Markham , John is 16 years of age and a farm worker and is shown as stepson to the head of the household James Scott a farmer.

2/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
John enlisted in Retford and served with the 2/7th battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys ) Regiment. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras memorial. Pte John Richard Fox Retford Times 6th December 1918 A Tuxford Soldier Mrs Scott, Cleveland House, Tuxford , received the sad news last week that her son Pte J R Fox, Sherwood Foresters, and only son of the late John Fox, Elkesley, who was reported missing since March 21st is now officially stated to have been killed in action on that date or died since. He was 21 years of age, and joined the Army in March 1917. he was employed at home on the farm. Mr Scott lost his younger son in action on in October 1916, and his elder and only surviving son, after serving in France, has been in hospital 16 months with enteric fever.

Also in loving memory of John Richard Fox, only son of the above who was killed in France, March 21st 1918, aged 22 years. ‘He rests in peace’
