Bertram Reuben Attenborough was born in 1892in Nottingham and was the son of Reuben Walter an insurance agent and Mary Jane Attenborough née Gibson, of 3 Conway Street, Nottingham. His father Reuben Walter was born in 1866 in Nottingham and his mother Mary Jane Gibson was also born in 1866 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1886 in Nottingham they went on to have 7 children all born in Nottingham , they were Percy Walter b1886, Ernest Arthur b1887, Elsie Annie b1890, Bertram Reuben b1892, Edgar b1893, Mabel Lucy b1894, and Walter b1904. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Conway Street, Nottingham and are shown as Reuben Walter 45 yrs an insurance agent, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 45 yrs and their children , Ernest Arthur 23 yrs a vanman, Elsie Annie 21 yrs a shop assistant, Bertram Reuben 19 yrs a hosiery traveller, Edgar 18 yrs a railway porter and Walter 7 yrs a scholar,
In 1911 he was employed as a hosiery traveller.

100th Bn Machine Gun Corps
Private Bertram Rueben Attenborough enlisted at Nottingham , he initially served with service number 12725 in the South Notts Hussars before transferring to the Machine Gun Corps, he died on 4th November 1918 in 20th General Hospital in Cannes, he is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery
His brother Ernest Arthur also served during the Great War, he was Lance Corporal Ernest Arthur Attenborough he enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1/1st South Nottinghamshire Hussars, he died of wounds on 17th October 1916 in Egypt. He is buried in Lahana Military Cemetery, Greece.
