Father: Albert E. Toplis, born in 1849 at Bulwell, Nottingham and working as an iron turner. Mother: Mary Ann Toplis, born in 1852 at Nottingham. Brothers:Tom, born 1876 and working as a labourer, Harry, born in 1879, Ireand(?), born in 1883, Charley, born in 1886, Leonard, born in 1887 and Herbert, born in 1890. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 30 Marple Street, Nottingham before moving to 35 Conway Street, St. Ann's Well Road, Nottingham. Ernest Toplis married Ellen Toplis in 1903 and they had one son, Albert Ernest born in Nottingham in 1908.
Ernest Toplis worked as a painter.

Spr. Toplis was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. He was killed in action in the Ypres Salient on 26/06/1917, and was buried at Bedford House Cemetery.
