01 Jul 1916
1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Pte. Mastery was with 1/7th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters at Foncquevillers prior to the attack on Gommecourt on 01/07/1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. When the men advanced across No Man's Land the Germans emerged from their fortified positions and shells and machine gun fire hit the four waves of Sherwood Foresters. Great gaps were torn in the lines and as they neared the German wire they saw that it had not been cut properly and that their task was hopeless. At the end of the day only 96 men answered roll call. Pte. Mastery was reported missing but was not confirmed dead until June 1917. His body was never found but his name was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier & Face 10C, 10D & 11A).
