He was the son of Walter and Fanny Mellors of 27 Sabina Street St Ann's Nottingham. Brother of William, Walter and Harold, who served in France.

Pte. Melons joined the Seaforth Highlanders before being transferred to 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He served for four years one month before he was killed in action during the heavy fighting on the Chemin des Dames Ridge. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial (Panel 6)
