9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
He served from early 1916 and probably joined the 9th battalion in July 1916 when they returned from Egypt. His family received his British War Medal and Victory Medal. On 24th 200 offices and men moved out on a working party at 2pm. They were tasked to dig a new trench forward of the British 1st line, and situated north of Beaumont Hamel (Somme). He was amongst one officer and eight other ranks killed by German shellfire. One officer and eighteen other ranks were also wounded. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, so was probably one of the men killed immediately. John Morse
