He was the son of Mark (died 1901) and Ada Spencer and the brother of George and Mark Spencer. In 1901 they lived at 32 Park Street Nottingham. In 1912 Ada married George Roe and they kept The Saracen's Head Sherwood Street later moving to 1 Hutchinson Street St Ann's (both Nottingham).
Leonard was a lift man upon enlistment.
