Son of Edward and Ellen Christmas, of 31, St. Matthias Rd., Sneinton, Nottingham (CWGC). At the time of the 1911 census, Edward and Ellen were living at 18 St Matthias Road, Sneinton; Edward was a caretaker. They had had ten children of whom eight survived: Emma Gladys (15, machinist blouse), Christopher Charles (14), Lois Barnett (11), Dorothea Phyllis (9), Edward Basil (8), Leslie Bernard (6), George Cyril (1) and Alfred Barnett (5 months).
Member of 2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads' Club). At the time of the 1911 census he was an errand boy.
